Paolo Sorrentino's masterful, Oscar-winning Best Foreign Language Film, The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza) is a modern classic of urban cinema and the Neapolitan director's love letter to Rome. Jep Gambardella, memorably played by Toni Servillo, can be considered an archetype for the aging bohemian intellectual from Kallio: life is a party, but sometimes even the eternally young king of parties wakes up to his mortality. Sorrentino's glowingly colorful, zesty and wistfully poetic cinematography caresses the surfaces of the Eternal City indelibly.
