The film about a school trip by French high school students to Naples and the ruins of Pompeii became a highlight of the Cannes Film Festival in the spring. This lively portrayal of a journey and coming-of-age, starring young actors, and Marine Atlan's feature debut, deservedly won the Critics' Week Grand Prize at Cannes.
Five-star reviews came from, among others, The Guardian's chief critic Peter Bradshaw, who praised the film as "astounding" and commended the brilliant acting and directing. The young characters of La Gradiva glow with astonishing naturalness and intensity. Charismatic queer teenager Toni (Colas Quignard) pursues an illusion of his lineage, while outsider Suzanne (Suzanne Gerin) experiences an awakening comparable to the eruption of Vesuvius. The passionate emotions of the young people, from jealousy to sexual tension, rise to the surface amidst the landscapes of Southern Italy and antiquity.
This film, one of the year's significant works, will be experienced in Karhupuisto before its general release. In its home country, France, the film will arrive in cinemas in November.
The film is part of the France Day program, in collaboration with: Institut français de Finlande
