Having charmed audiences at the Sundance Film Festival in January and had its international premiere at Berlinale in February, The Only Living Pickpocket in New York arrives in Karhupuisto for its Nordic premiere before its theatrical release in the United States in autumn.
This cinematic event, which borrows its name from a Simon & Garfunkel song, depicts aging pickpocket Harry, played with gentle power by John Turturro, who is soon to turn seventy. It would be hard to find a more fitting actor than Turturro, who has had a long career as a trusted actor for Spike Lee, for this contemporary portrayal of New York.
Harry is a master pickpocket from the analog era, which creates challenges for the grizzled street fox in the digital world. An unlucky heist takes the viewer on Harry's journey through all five boroughs of New York, from Ben (Steve Buscemi), who runs a pawn shop in the Bronx, through Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, to Staten Island. The wistfully fast-paced story is accompanied by a 1970s groove and LCD Soundsystem's ode to a changed New York.
