Discussion: The Hot City – How Do We Live in a Changing Climate?

Climate change is taking a heavy toll on cities. Urban areas across Europe are warming at record rates, while wildfires are becoming more frequent and destructive.

How are cities preparing for this new reality, and what should they do differently in a rapidly warming Europe? How can cities learn from each other – and what could Europe learn from the fast-growing metropolitan areas of the Global South, where adapting to extreme heat is already a part of everyday life?

How can we work with urban nature instead of against it? Well-designed urban ecosystems can help cool cities, reduce the risk of wildfires, and make communities more climate-resilient. And how can technology help us build cities that are not only smarter but also better prepared for a hotter future?

The discussion panelists are:

İdil Gaziulusoy, Professor of Sustainable Design, Aalto University
Amanda Pasanen, environmental expert and chair of the Helsinki Green City Council group
Annastiina Heikkilä, journalist, author and former Yle Paris correspondent.
