Self-initiated urban culture is the heartbeat of a city. It is born from people who organize, experiment, build, and invite others to participate. It brings new encounters, ideas, and places for activity to streets and neighborhoods – but a vibrant city doesn't create itself. It needs space, opportunities, and the courage to do things differently.

This discussion, organized by the Käänne Festival, examines the current state of self-initiated and open urban culture in Helsinki. What kind of urban cultural era are we living in, and what does self-initiated activity in Helsinki look like today? What are the conditions for creating urban culture? How could self-initiated activity be supported, and how could the city better enable it? And what are the prospects for the future?

Umut Kiukas

A Helsinki-based gallerist and long-time influencer in graffiti, who has built a bridge between street culture and contemporary art. His work has been crucial in strengthening the visibility and status of graffiti.

Outi Kemlin - Käpylän kiska

Käpylän kiska is a non-profit cultural cafe with a long history, prioritizing minimizing prices and maximizing good vibes. The kiosk and its park serve as a platform for alternative culture, enabling dozens of free, all-ages events during the summer.

Eeva Valtokari - Thehelsgoinon

Thehelsgoinon is an independent media highlighting Helsinki events and actors, created by city residents for each other.

Salli Salminen - DJ Sallidoing/Korgy

Korgy is a Helsinki-based techno-trance phenomenon, known for the city's most popular and talked-about parties. With a focus on dance floor energy and fun, it has grown into a community-driven movement that draws people from afar to experience it live in Helsinki.

Alku Sirén

The discussion will be moderated by Alku Sirén, a leading advisor at Miltton and a versatile, long-time contributor to urban culture. He is known as one of the founders of Restaurant Day, and urban journalists chose him as Helsinki's City Dweller of the Year in 2011 for revitalizing Helsinki's urban culture. Sirén is also one of the founders of the Käänne Festival.
