Set within Istanbul’s art world, the film follows Aslı, a young idealistic photographer searching for her place in the vast city’s complicated art scene and trying to get her work exhibited. She is supported by her exceptionally kind flatmate Murat, who patiently listens as Aslı rails against the system.

Melik Kuru’s feature-length directorial debut offers Ruben Östlund-style satire of the art world’s grotesque posturing, alongside a rarely seen portrait of everyday urban life among young Turks in their twenties.

In Kuru’s film, the endlessly fascinating Istanbul appears in black and white—like the photographs of Ara Güler or the narrowing prospects of Turkey’s younger generation. The director has cited the French New Wave and Luis Buñuel as inspirations.

Dump of Untitled Pieces (İsimsiz Eserler Mezarlığı in Turkish) won three awards at the Istanbul Film Festival, including one for its memorable and vibrant score by Efe Demiral and Simge Pınar.
