“Fasting cures all diseases,” proclaims American alternative-health guru Paul Bragg’s book The Miracle of Fasting, which is read in Karolis Kaupinis’s Hunger Strike Breakfast.

In January 1991, thousands of people took to the streets of Vilnius to protest the Soviet occupation. In an attempt to suppress the demonstrations, Soviet forces seized control of media outlets. Most of those dismissed from Lithuania’s public broadcaster were too afraid to resist, but Daiva—a well-known television announcer and familiar face across the country—decided to begin a hunger strike alongside a few other courageous colleagues.

Based on a true story, the film won awards for Best Costume Design and Best Make-up at Lithuania’s equivalent of the Oscars. Kaupinis is himself a well-known television journalist in Lithuania. He has described the occupation of the television studios as his earliest childhood memory.

The film is part of the Karhupuisto Film Festival’s Lithuania Focus.
