Cooking has rarely looked as inspiring and fun as in the film Mam, which is a love letter to food and friendship.
Jerald, from Texas, dreams of opening his own Vietnamese restaurant in New York. However, the dream seems distant: Jerald is in debt and works two jobs, as a salesperson in a spice shop and a dishwasher in a restaurant where the owner, Chen, won't let Jerald cook despite his skills. At night, Jerald secretly takes over the restaurant kitchen: he cuts, boils, stews, and tastes, honing his skills. When Jerald meets Nhung, a waitress, she is impressed by Jerald's cooking skills.
Mam is a real restaurant in New York's Chinatown. No one in front of the camera is a professional actor; instead, the performers are genuine locals or friends of the filmmakers.
For director Nan Feix, food is a universal language that connects without the need for a single word. A film about Vietnamese street food has been a long-time dream for her.
Mam won the Culinary Cinema Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
