Cooking has rarely looked as inspiring and enjoyable as it does in Mam, a love letter to food and friendship.
Jerald, a Texan, dreams of opening his own Vietnamese restaurant in New York. The dream, however, feels far out of reach: he is in debt and works two jobs—serving customers at a spice shop and washing dishes at a restaurant where the owner, Chen, refuses to let him cook despite his talent. At night, Jerald secretly takes over the restaurant kitchen, chopping, boiling, simmering and tasting as he hones his skills. When Jerald meets Nhung, who works as a waitress, she is impressed by his cooking.
Mam is a real restaurant in New York’s Chinatown. None of the people appearing on camera are professional actors; they are local residents or friends of the filmmakers.
For director Nan Feix, food is a universal language that brings people together without the need to say a word. Making a film about Vietnamese street food had long been a dream of his.
Mam won the Culinary Cinema Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
Only 80 tickets are available for the brunch screening. Brunch is included in the ticket price.
