A final breath of summer drifts through Karhupuisto with a special 30th-anniversary screening of what may be Éric Rohmer’s most beloved film, A Summer’s Tale (Conte d’été).

One of the later works by the French New Wave legend, the film draws on Rohmer’s own experiences as a young man. In Dinard, a seaside town in north-western France, Gaspard waits for his girlfriend Léna to join him for their holiday. When Léna takes her time arriving, Gaspard becomes involved with Margot, an ethnology student, and Solène, a local woman. When Léna finally appears, Gaspard—having pursued his romantic interests in several directions—finds himself facing a difficult choice.

The film’s themes are quintessential Rohmer, as Iida Sofia Hirvonen delights in describing them in her essay for the festival magazine: idyllic landscapes, lingering kisses, photogenic actors, aimless wandering, overlapping relationships and the difficulty of making choices—all masterfully portrayed through a lens of gentle, pleasurable irony.

The film is part of the festival’s France Day programme.
