Arriving in Karhupuisto for its Nordic premiere, Allegro Pastell explores themes that will feel familiar to Kallio residents: freelance work, open relationships, and struggles with identity and plans for the future.

Based on Leif Randt’s bestselling novel, which became a literary sensation in Germany, this millennial romance takes us back to the summer of 2018 and a turbulent relationship. Tanja, 33, is a writer living in Berlin, while Jerome, 35, is a web designer who has recently moved back into his parents’ home near Frankfurt.

At first, the long-distance relationship works. In true 2018 fashion, they stay in touch through lengthy emails, and passion flares whenever they meet. Tensions come to a head on Tanja’s birthday, when Jerome creates a personal website for her as a gift.

Allegro Pastell refers to an existential transformation: the intensity of one’s twenties begins to fade, and calmer pastel shades start to emerge alongside the brighter colours. Yet the idea of settling down still feels suffocating.

Gliding beautifully from Berlin’s clubs and parks to the streets of Frankfurt and Lisbon, the film is a visual feast. Felix Pflieger’s cinematography, Lena Müller and Luisa Rauschert’s production design, and Belle Santos’s costumes create striking contrasts against the characters’ nuanced emotions.

Max Rieger’s ambient score is combined with sounds that capture the spirit of the era: Eurodance, Robyn, and house beats by Roman Flügel and Gerd Janson.

Director Anna Roller, one of Germany’s most exciting rising filmmakers, will attend the screening to introduce her film. It is fuelled by a gentle nostalgia for a time when hangovers were milder, tomorrow caused less anxiety, and the world seemed reassuringly coherent. Perhaps one day, we will look back on autumn 2026 with the same sense of longing.
