Known as the Montmartre of the 21st century, Belleville is one of Paris’s most multicultural neighbourhoods, filled with street art, artists’ studios and immigrant communities. The bohemian district has become a symbol of the cultural and ideological changes reshaping Paris—as well as the city’s gentrification, explored in the documentary Belleville Beats.

Centred around the La Perm youth centre, the documentary contains more conversation than many films combined—and for good reason: these young people have something to say. They speak about identity, racism, police violence and the transformation of their home city. The centre’s mentors help them find employment, education and, more broadly, their own place in the world, while encouraging them to examine and develop their ideas. La Perm provides a space for debate and dreaming, but also for concrete action: the documentary builds towards the Belleville en Vrai music festival, organised by the young people in a local park.

This inspiring portrait of young people and life in a major city premiered at Copenhagen’s CPHDOX festival in the spring.

The film is part of the Karhupuisto Film Festival’s France Day programme.
