This film about a group of French high school students on a class trip to Naples and the ruins of Pompeii became one of the highlights of the Cannes Film Festival this spring. Featuring a cast of young actors, Marine Atlan’s vibrant travel and coming-of-age film—and feature-length directorial debut—deservedly won the Grand Prize at Cannes Critics’ Week.

The film received several five-star reviews, including one from The Guardian’s chief film critic Peter Bradshaw, who called it “astonishing” and praised its outstanding performances and direction. The young characters of La Gradiva feel remarkably natural and intense. Charismatic queer teenager Toni (Colas Quignard) pursues an illusion about his family, while outsider Suzanne (Suzanne Gerin) experiences an awakening comparable to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Against the landscapes of southern Italy and antiquity, the young people’s passionate emotions—from jealousy to sexual tension—rise to the surface.

One of the year’s standout films can be experienced in Karhupuisto before its general release. The film will open in cinemas in its home country, France, in November.

The film is part of the France Day programme.
