In Manila, the corrupt capital of the Philippines in the 1970s, no one can be trusted—least of all the authorities. Among the corrupt is Police Chief Bernal, who ruthlessly abuses his power for personal gain. Fed up with the corruption, police officer Dahl breaks into her boss’s mansion to steal money for a local slum community. Matters become complicated when she is assigned to investigate the very robbery she committed. Her partner on the case is Charlie, her boss’s nephew and her own former lover from years ago. A dangerous struggle for survival begins in the streets of Manila at night, after which nothing will ever be the same.

Premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Moonglow is a dreamlike neo-noir whose hazy imagery and atmosphere pay homage to In the Mood for Love. According to the prestigious distributor The Criterion Collection, director and screenwriter Isabel Sandoval is “one of the most exciting and versatile filmmakers on the independent scene.” Sandoval also stars in the film.
