After captivating audiences at the Sundance Film Festival in January and receiving its international premiere at the Berlinale in February, The Only Living Pickpocket in New York arrives in Karhupuisto for its Nordic premiere ahead of its US theatrical release this autumn.
Borrowing its title from a Simon & Garfunkel song, the film follows Harry, an ageing pickpocket portrayed with gentle intensity by John Turturro, himself approaching seventy. A long-time regular in films by directors such as Spike Lee, Turturro is a particularly fitting presence for this timely portrait of New York.
Harry is a master pickpocket from the analogue era, which presents the seasoned street operator with new challenges in a digital world. A job gone wrong takes the audience alongside Harry through all five boroughs of New York—from Ben’s pawnshop in the Bronx, where Ben is played by Steve Buscemi, through Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, and finally to Staten Island. The wistful yet fast-paced story is accompanied by a 1970s groove and LCD Soundsystem’s ode to a changing New York.
