Pussikaljaelokuva returns home to Kallio! Based on Mikko Rimminen’s novel Pussikaljaromaani and directed by Ville Jankeri, the film is one of the defining portrayals of the Kallio district. It receives the anniversary screening it deserves in Karhupuisto, accompanied by special guests and a themed walking tour.

Pussikaljaelokuva is already a nostalgic ode to idleness and drifting through life. Set over the course of a single summer day, the film follows the odyssey of three thirty-something men who have embraced unemployment as a way of life—Marsalkka, Lihi, and Henninen. Their journey takes them from the Kustaa Vaasa terrace to Pengerpuisto and from Helsinginkatu to Hakaniemi, culminating at dawn in Karhupuisto.

Over the course of the day, the warm-hearted trio—played by Jussi Nikkilä, Eero Milonoff, and Ylermi Rajamaa—face such challenges as stepping in dog mess, receiving a public-transport fine, and enduring a power cut at a bar. “We’re complete losers,” Henninen laments, but their friendship carries them through.

Rich in Rimminen’s distinctive vernacular, the film is filled with places familiar to Helsinki residents. It also reveals just how dramatically Kallio has changed over the past 15 years.
