Danielius, who lives in Norway, returns to the small Lithuanian seaside town of Šventoji during the final days of summer to sell his parents’ apartment. While waiting for a buyer, he has time to reconnect with the landscapes of his childhood.

Danielius revisits familiar places, from bars to forests, and encounters people he knew in the past. Yet everything feels strange and tinged with melancholy.

Shot on grainy 16 mm film, Svečias – The Visitor is a warmly charming and delightfully funny film about the places that shape our lives, farewells, and inevitable change.

Best known as a cinematographer, Vytautas Katkus makes his feature-length directorial debut with a film that represents the powerful new wave of Lithuanian cinema. Katkus’s bold approach is evident in his choice of lead actor: Darius Šilėnas is not an actor at all, but works as a film editor by profession.

Svečias – The Visitor premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it won the Best Director Award. The film’s triumphant run culminated this spring at the Lithuanian Film Awards, where it received the top honours for directing, screenwriting, and Best Film.

The film is part of the Karhupuisto Film Festival’s Lithuania Focus.
