The closing film of the Karhupuisto Film Festival pauses to contemplate some of life’s biggest questions. Why do some people live long lives while others pass away at an early age? What is the secret to longevity—or is there one at all?

The Oldest Person in the World begins with our fascination with the world’s oldest living people. Whenever the world’s oldest person dies, the news receives widespread media attention.

Filmed over ten years, the documentary introduces no fewer than six holders of the title, which understandably passes fairly frequently from one person aged over 110 to another.

As award-winning director Sam Green meets the world’s oldest people in Japan, Italy, Spain, and France, he also examines life and its limits through the arc of his own life. Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, The Oldest Person in the World ultimately becomes a universal meditation on the finite nature of life—and on the extraordinary gift of being alive.
