Eighteen-year-old high school student Arūnas experiences life-changing moments in the small Lithuanian seaside city of Klaipėda. He grows up surrounded by adults struggling with their own disappointments and unfulfilled dreams. His father bores him with stories about the war. His mother suddenly leaves with Arūnas’s younger brother to pursue an old dream and try her hand as an artist. A pro-Communist classmate reports Arūnas, who is expelled from school just as his rebellious friend Benas was before him. Arūnas drifts through life with Benas until he meets a woman named Rasa.

The Small Confession (Maža išpažintis) is one of Lithuania’s most significant cinematic classics. This coming-of-age story explores the generation gap at a time when Lithuania’s emerging rock generation was colliding with the apathy and frustration of the post-war Soviet republic.

The film is part of the Karhupuisto Film Festival’s Lithuania Focus.
